What is the School Council?
At New Cangle, our aim is for all children to have a voice and contribute towards the continuous improvement of our school community.
The School Council is a body of students elected each year by their peers in a formal election setting. It is made up of representatives from each class from Yr1 to Yr5, as well as the Head Girl, Head Boy and their Deputies. These students are selected by their classmates to represent the views of all the pupils, consider ways to improve their school and discuss matters about their learning and school life. New Cangle firmly believes that young people should be encouraged to share their voice and opinions regarding their learning and to think about how they can have a positive impact upon these. The school council provides direct experience of debating and negotiating issues and enables the children to see the 'bigger picture' of how the whole school is run.
Aims of the School Council
· To give pupils the opportunity to let adults know their feelings and opinions about things that affect them.
· To allow pupils to have a say in decisions and to play an active role in making their school a better place for all.
The School Council hopes to achieve these aims by:
· Working with the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and Governors to share opinions on matters which affect the school community.
· Developing creative ways to involve parents in the school.
· Serving as a voice for the pupils of New Cangle within the school and within the community.
· Listening to the views of classes and represent these ideas and views during school council meetings.
· Feedbacking key issues from these meetings to classes.
· Acting as role models to peers.
Meetings
School councillors aim to meet once a month to work on current projects and discuss key issues.
Our School Council is guided by Mrs Laurie, our Early Years Lead, who enjoys helping the children have an influence in school.
